You probably are thinking about having corals for your home aquarium – and Acan Coral is one of your options. On the contrary to what people believe, aquariums don’t always have to be filled with fish. You can actually fill them with various marine lives, including corals. If you think about having corals, you should know that you have made a unique option. There are so many types of corals out there, and not all of them can be used for home décor. But with acan coral, you can improve the look of the house with a unique option.
Understanding Acan Coral
When we are talking about Acan coral, we are talking about a fleshy and big LPS coral that you can find at the upper part of the ocean (around 30 meters). LPS coral refers to coral species group having a stone skeleton. It is made from big (and fleshy polyps) and calcium carbonate. Many of this popular type of coral look like a cross of a small soft and also polyp stone coral type.
The characteristic of this coral is its bright colors – and they have limitless numbers of shade variations. That’s why this type of coral is considered perfect for home decoration. When filled in the aquarium, the coral will make the aquarium look colorful and visually pleasing. This type of coral usually feed at night. If you keep them in a reef tank, they will usually adapt to the feeding time that you give them.
The Care Guide
Also known as Acan Lords, this Acanthastrea corals, are popular as the colored and beautiful (soft) coral species. Their shades are brown, orange, rust, blue, green, red, purple, pale grey, or pale tan. If this is your first time growing them, you have made a perfect choice – they are the easiest (and also the simplest) LPS corals that you can grow.
Some Quick Facts Acan Coral
Besides being known as the Acan coral, this type of coral is also known as Micros, Acan Lords, Micromussa, or Micro Lords. The level of care difficulty would be moderate. They are also considered semi-aggressive. They don’t want to touch other corals – sometimes include other types of Acans. However, some people have reported the coral to be quite peaceful and….well, quiet. In terms of expenses, the price is quite affordable. However, some of the popular varieties (such as Lordhowensis or a type of Micromussa) can be quite expensive.
The Condition in the Ocean
Many of this coral species can be found in South Pacific Ocean (such as Hong Kong, the Philippines, and others). You can find them in waters between 0 meter and 30 meters deep. The depth is the similar kind of depth that most waterproof watches can handle. If you are out on the ocean and you go underwater, you may want to take the watch with you. If you can still see the time, big chances that you will see the coral. In the ocean, the coral feeds at night – well, mostly. However, they are pretty adaptable and versatile. In an aquarium, they will follow your feeding time.
The Condition in the Aquarium
It’s a good thing that most home aquariums have a good depth that isn’t more than 30 meters. If you decide to keep the Acan coral, not only you can provide the needed care, but you can also do it quite easily. At least, it won’t be complicated or full of drama. This coral is typically hardy. It is also easy to maintain and care. A lot of experts claim that this species would be great for intermediate aquarists. And let’s not forget about the beauty of color varieties.
The (Proper) Placement
So, where should you place the Acan coral? If you just start out the hobby, this can be overwhelming and confusing at the same time. Well, first of all, check the aquarium. Does your new friend have enough room? This coral needs a lot of room so it can grow well – and properly. This is one aspect that most people make mistake in. Beginner aquarist usually places the coral just too tightly and closely. It’s because they focus on the current look of the water tank – not thinking about the future growth. You see, corals are living creatures. And just like other living creatures, corals grow – and they need enough space for it. Moreover, coral actually has this sweeper-like tentacles that can be quite nasty. If you provide enough space between colonies, you put them in peace. There won’t be any turf war between colonies.
Another ideal placement is to include moderate lighting and water flow. It should be right – not too little or too much. The coral, after all, is a big polyp (stony) coral. You don’t want to have high water flow which may rip the flesh. Don’t forget that this coral is photosynthetic, which means that it loves moderately high lighting. However, it can still tolerate lower end spectrum within the moderate lighting too.
Common Issues Acan Coral
You want to see your Acan corals extending their polyps. If they don’t extend the polyps, it can be 2 things: it is dying. Another possibility is that the coral isn’t happy within your tank. The reason? It can be that the coral gets too much light or it gets too much water (flow). Check the water parameters. If they are good and they are stable, and yet the coral doesn’t extend the polyps (even during feeding or at night), then it is likely the water is or the light is too strong. Try moving your coral to another area – an area with less (intense) light or lower water flow. It can also be both. The key is to observe your corals’ response.
The Feeding Time and Management
As photosynthetic creature, Acan coral take a part of the calories from commensal zooxanthellae living in their tissue. They may also take some nutrients from water (column) source. It helps to keep the nutrient levels intact and within a proper level. If you place them in the tank, this part can be handy.
However, you should remember that corals like Acan have the combination of light plants and true plant-like – as well as the animal. Light plants mean that they convert light to energy and absorb nutrients from water. True plant-like means that their behavior is like the plants – and it is the zooxanthellae having such a behavior. But never forget that corals are basically animals. And all animals eat. It means that feeding the Acan is a must.
What do Acan corals eat? Well, they eat chopped seafood, artemia, and copepods. But they also eat commercial foods, such as pellet, flake, and frozen. During the feeding time, Acan coral will extend the polyps – their function is to catch the food or capture the prey. Don’t worry whether the corals can eat it. If it can catch whatever it is and pull it in, then it can feed just well. You can use certain tools, such as Julian’s thing, to help you feed the corals. With this item, you can target feed the coral. It is able to squirt gentle and tiny food blast over the coral’s polyps. If you want to ‘test’ your coral out, you can try it first. A lot of coral owners state that the corals grow pretty quickly once they feed those corals.
Acan Lord Corals Compatibility
Acan Lords are typically quite compatible with other species. But keep in mind that the key factor to ensure safe and peaceful compatibility is enough space. Coral war turf or warfare happens when the corals are too jammed and too closely packed together. If you allow a colony of Green Star Polyp to grow right next to them or right on them, the war would be inevitable. Make sure you provide enough space for them to grow and thrive, and Acan coral would be an attractive (and unique) addition to the saltwater aquarium.
If you want to keep the coral with soft leather corals, there are several measurements to take first. Use activate carbon to neutralize the possibility of chemical warfare (possibly started by the leather corals). Check for water changes and keep up with it. If you want the Acan to be completely decorative, you shouldn’t mix it together with fish. But if you plan the coral to be the food source for the fish – well, that’s another story. But then again, it would be costly and many don’t recommend it.
Finding the Corals
So, where can you buy this type of coral? Well, basically everywhere as this species is quite popular. You should be able to find them at the local fish stores (the above-average types) and also several online stores, such as LiveAquaria. Don’t be overwhelmed by their types and varieties. You may also encounter unique names like Superman, Green, Aussie Lord, Rainbow, and others.
Make sure that you have researched the proper way to care the corals. Acan coral can be a great option to spark colors and visual to the house, but it takes extra care from your part too.
